PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) — Vicki Van Meter, who made headlines in the 1990s for piloting a plane across the United States at age 11 and from the U.S. to Europe at age 12, died in an apparent suicide. She was 26.

art.van.meter.ap.jpg

Vicki Van Meter’s mother said “she had more guts than any of us could ever imagine.”

Van Meter died Saturday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Crawford County coroner said. Her body was found in her Meadville, Pennsylvania, home on Sunday.

Her brother said she battled depression, but her family thought she had been dealing with her problems.

“She was unhappy, but it was hard for her to open up about that, and we all thought that she was coping,” Daniel Van Meter said. He said she had opposed taking medication.

Van Meter was celebrated in 1993 and 1994 when she made her cross-country and trans-Atlantic flights accompanied by only a flight instructor. Her instructors said she was at the controls during the entirety of both trips.

“If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything,” Van Meter said before her second trip. In her teens, she said she hoped to become an astronaut when she grew up.

Later she earned a degree in criminal justice from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and spent two years with the Peace Corps in the former Soviet republic of Moldova. She recently worked as an investigator for an insurance company.

Her mother, Corinne Van Meter, said her daughter had begun applying to graduate schools and wanted to study psychology.

Van Meter was a sixth-grader in September 1993 when she flew from Augusta, Maine, to San Diego over five days. She had to fight strong headwinds and turbulence that bounced her single-engine Cessna 172 and made her sick.

At the time, she was believed to be the youngest girl to fly across the United States. That record was broken by a 9-year-old in 1994.

Also in 1994, Van Meter flew from Augusta to Glasgow, Scotland, and was credited with being the youngest girl to make a trans-Atlantic flight. She battled dizziness brought on by high altitude and declared upon landing: “I always thought it would be real hard, and it was.”

The child pilot phenomenon ended in 1996, when 7-year-old Jessica Dubroff, her father and the instructor supervising the flight were killed in a crash in Wyoming while Jessica was trying to become the youngest person to fly across the country. Congress quickly passed a bill banning record-setting attempts by unlicensed pilots.

“I was really rooting for her, but I guess reality says accidents do happen,” Van Meter, then 14, said at the time of the crash. “It’s unfortunate it had to happen to someone so brave, someone trying to fulfill her dreams.”

Corinne Van Meter said her daughter “led a full and interesting life. … She had more guts than any of us could ever imagine.”

Van Meter’s funeral will be held in Meadville, but arrangements have not been finalized.

Now, I’ve never heard of Vicki Van Meter, but I’m sad to hear such news anyway. 26, mmm mm mmmm…I know the 20’s are hell, but I guess some people feel the only way to escape the pain is to stop living. I’ve definitely been on that end of the spectrum. It’s so sad to read about people killing themselves (esp. youth) because they leave so many unanswered questions. If you like myself have never heard of Van Meter, but would like to know more about her, u can check out her book:

I’m sure it’s available at a library near you, or just go to Amazon.com

Obama to Set The Record Straight…

In Pennsylvania,Obama told reporters that he would address racial issues, and the mess created by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. The speech is to be a “discussion on race and politics.”

Obama will deliver a speech on race and politics Tuesday.
Obama will deliver a speech on race and politics Tuesday.

In reference to Jeremiah Wright, Obama says:

“I think the caricature that is being painted of him is not accurate, and so part of what I will do tomorrow is to talk about how these issues are perceived from within the black church community for example which I think skews this very differently.”

Yeah ok, if you say so Obama.

This oughta be interesting.

Stay tuned until tomorrow.

If A Nanny Can Tell U How To Raise Your Kids on TV, Then a School Can Potty Train Your Child!!

I’m not sure where I am on this subject:
POTTY TRAINING.
It can be difficult, and frustrating for both parties (parent/child), but I’m not sure if I was able to send my child to a potty training school, I would have taken advantage of the opportunity.
Keeping it real…I know I wouldn’t have.
I would’ve taken that (putting my child in a potty training school) as a blow to my parenting skills, and I would feel unworthy being a parent.
The image “http://pottyaid.com/potty-training-reading.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
But that’s just MY OPINION.
Heck, if they can sell canine couture clothing, I guess you can have a potty training school. I mean they do have stripper pole classes…same ridiculousness, right?
lol
At Children’s Hospital Boston, potty training school has been a godsend. Some children are traumatized by the sound of a flushing toilet, other kids just aren’t ready to be potty trained.
I learned that lesson. I tried to potty train my son prematurely and it was a disaster.
He was almost 3yrs old (after 100 trillion mothers told me, boys are late bloomers and you can’t rush them), but looked 5yrs old, when he was potty-trained. I’m happy to say he was a success. The first night in his big boy pants, I woke up every 2 hours to check on him and take him to the bathroom.
Nothing.
Next morning I woke up taking the “dead man walking” walk to his room, fearful an aromatic urine whiff would meet me at the threshold of his room.
Nothing.
My kid had his 1st successful night in his big boy pants.
I’m happy to report he’s been piss and Pampers free ever since (he’ll be 17 in July).
But that’s just me.
If you’re on the verge of doing some abusive, wrestling moves on your child bcuz they’re wetting themselves or they refuse to be potty train…
SEND THEIR PISSY BEHINDS TO A POTTY TRAINING SCHOOL-cuz if you make the news due to hurting your child, I’m sending YOUR story to Parents Behaving Badly!
But send them AFTER you’ve taken them to the dr., and made sure your pissy angel is ok physiologically. Truth be told YOU may be your child’s hindrance to potty training success.

You probably scared the piss back into their kidneys!
I’m just saying…

I’m not trying to be Bessie Stringfield but I’m gone learn how to ride a bike (i.e, motorcycle). Perhaps it’s bcuz I’m turning 40 next month, or maybe it’s bcuz my children are young adults-and depend on me less, or maybe it’s bcuz I want to conquer an old fear (of being vulnerable on a motorcycle)…shoot, maybe it’s a combo of all of the above-but one thing’s for certain:
I’m gone learn how to ride a motorcycle!!
***Bessie Stringfield made 8 long-distance, solo trips across the U.S.A. in the 1930’s & ’40’s… do you know how dangerous that was for a woman, let alone a BLACK WOMAN?! Bessie was truly a “G.”***
As a matter of fact, although I was shaking, I called this morning and registered for my Motorcycle Endorsement class! Class starts on May 2nd!! Oh my goodness, i’m excited! Of course I’ll keep you all posted!! :)
Pics of Bessie Stringfield with and on her true love, her bike. Bessie received her 1st bike at the age of 16, and rode until she couldn’t anymore. She was an ardent Harley-Davidson fan, and broke down barriers for black people and women. For more information on Bessie Stringfield, click on the link above.

I hope to be like Kia (below) from Get Your Own Bike, and purchase my own bike! The caveat is, in Michigan you can only ride maybe 3 mos out of the year due to the weather :(

Eccentric, transvestite dressing, nightmare-inducing singing group Gnarls Barkley has a video called “Run” that will not be getting any airtime by MTV. As hood and tacky as MTV ( who’d air their mamas taking a bath in tomato juice if it meant high ratings) is something is DEFINITELY wrong if they refuse airing. I don’t know if this is a japanese video game or what-but the video is said to may cause epileptic seizures. Huh?? I guess there’s some blinking lights and blah blah going on and maybe it triggered a seizure or two-who knows. Just consider yourself warned. For those who like to walk on the wild side, check out the video entitled “Run” by Gnarls Barkley:

What Bria Means

You are full of energy. You are spirited and boisterous.
You are bold and daring. You are willing to do some pretty outrageous things.Your high energy sometimes gets you in trouble. You can have a pretty bad temper at times. You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You’re always up to something. You have a ton of energy, and most people can’t handle you. You’re very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you’re likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It’s easy to get you excited… which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don’t stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are usually the best at everything … you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic “Type A” personality.

*sigh* Hillary’s Still Here…

Silly of me to assume she was just going to HAND OVER the election to Obama! She definitely has fight in her, but I’m ready for her to go. Whenever I think about November being EIGHT MOS away, & it’ll be EIGHT MOS before all of this is over (for constituents) my bones ache!! Hillary is definitely going to give Obama a run for his money, and that’ll make his being prez all the more sweeter-he’ll appreciate it more.
Congrats Hillary!

(CNN) — Sen. Hillary Clinton got her campaign back on track with projected wins in the Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island primaries.

Sen. Hillary Clinton claimed victory in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island.

Delegate-rich Texas and Ohio were considered must-wins for her campaign.

Obama, who claimed victory in Vermont, had won 12 straight contests since Super Tuesday on February 5.

Texas also held Democratic caucuses Tuesday, but it was too close to declare a winner.

“For everyone here in Ohio and across America who’s been ever been counted out but refused to be knocked out, for everyone who has stumbled but stood right back up, and for everyone who works hard and never gives up — this one is for you,” Clinton said before supporters in Columbus.

“You know what they say,” she said. “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation. Well, this nation’s coming back and so is this campaign.”

Obama congratulated Clinton on her victories but downplayed his losses. CNN’s political team weighs in on the results »

“We know this: No matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead as we had this morning, and we are on our way to winning this nomination,” Obama told supporters in Texas.

Sen. John McCain swept all four Republican contests on Tuesday to become his party’s presumptive nominee. Read about McCain’s victory

McCain won primaries in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, giving him more than the 1,191 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Don’t Miss

“I am very, very grateful and pleased to note that tonight, my friends, we have won enough delegates to claim with confidence, humility and a great sense of responsibility, that I will be the Republican nominee for president of the United States,” McCain told supporters Tuesday night. Mike Huckabee dropped out of the Republican race after the results came in.

“It’s now important that we turn our attention not to what could have been or what we wanted to have been, but now what must be — and that is a united party,” Huckabee told a crowd in Dallas. Video Watch Huckabee bow out »

McCain is slated to go to the White House on Wednesday to receive the endorsement of President Bush, according to two Republican sources.

The Arizona senator’s campaign — his second run for the White House — was largely written off for dead last summer amid outspoken opposition from the party’s conservative base, a major staff shakeup and disappointing fundraising.

But McCain said earlier Tuesday that he was confident he would emerge as the presumptive nominee by the end of the night.

McCain overwhelmingly won moderates and conservatives in Ohio, but he lost the evangelical vote to Huckabee, according to exit polls.

Obama’s campaign pressed to extend voting by one hour in two Ohio counties. See county-by-county results in Ohio

“Due to reports of ballot shortages in Cuyahoga and Franklin counties, we requested a voting extension in those counties,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

A judge ruled to keep parts of Cuyahoga county open an extra hour.

In Texas, Clinton held a two-to-one advantage over Obama with Hispanic voters, while ObamaSee county-by-county results in Texas had the overwhelming advantage with black voters in the state’s Democratic primary, according to CNN’s exit poll.

Eighty-three percent of blacks voted for Obama, while 16 percent supported Clinton, according to the exit poll.

Meanwhile, 64 percent of Hispanics backed Clinton, while 32 percent went for Obama.

Early exit polls indicate a distinct “age gap” in both states.

Obama appealed most strongly to younger voters while older voters favored Clinton. Among Ohio Democratic primary voters aged 17 to 29, 65 percent went for Obama, and 34 percent went for Clinton. Among those age 60 and older, Clinton led Obama 67-31 percent.

The same pattern held true in early exit polling from the Texas Democratic primary. Among voters aged 18 to 29, Obama led Clinton 61-39 percent, and among voters 60 and older, Clinton led Obama 63- 36 percent.

Poll workers in Collin County, near Dallas, estimated that nearly three-quarters of the Democratic voters would participate in the Democratic caucuses to be held after the polls close.

In an unusual system, the 193 delegates that Texas will send to the Democratic National Convention will be split between Obama and Clinton according to the results of both the primary and the caucuses.

State party officials say the dual primary/caucus system promotes participation in the party. Both Clinton and Obama have encouraged supporters to do the “Texas two-step” and vote in both events.

Obama came into the day with momentum on his side. He had 1,378 pledged delegates and superdelegates to Clinton’s 1,269.

Neither candidate is close to the 2,025 needed to win the Democratic nomination. Allocate delegates yourself and see how the numbers add up »

Former President Bill Clinton said in February that if his wife won Ohio and Texas, she’d go on to win the nomination. source
