Speaking of diet pills…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 30, 2008 in General

I know there are people who are on diets now in anticipation of the holidays. However for procrastinators who wait til the last minute, diet pills to burn away the fat will be the method used.  While not all diet pills are bad for you, how do you know which pill won’t kill you? You don’t.  However there is a source that does. You’ll learn what the worse/best diet pills are. You’ll learn about warnings as well as read reviews.

Diet Pills/Diet Pills will teach u the differences between the diet pills.  If you were anything like me, I popped Dexatrim and Herbalife and was shaking like a leaf 10 min later with palpitations.  U had enough energy to clean 3 houses, but when u crashed boy did u crash.

Life Changes…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 30, 2008 in General

I have just completed a class at University of Phoenix called Human Nutrition.  I thought it would be a class that was simply about the 5 food groups. Was I wrong.  I learned about macronutrients, micronutrients, energy  dense, calorie dense foods etc.

I also became aware of the steps the U.S. government takes in order to ensure our health such as fortifying our cereals, fluoride in our water, being able to eat even if you’re poor (thanks to certain programs).  I’ve learned about malnutritional diseases called Kwashiorkor and Marasmus-diseases that are foreign to us, but common in 3rd world countries. Kwashiorkor is defined as the disease the first child gets when the new child comes.  Meaning, in poor countries when a new mother has another child, because she doesn’t have enough body mass to feed two children-she has to choose whom to feed. It’ll be the newest child-therefore the older child starves and wastes away.  These lessons taught me how I take myself for granted. I have gotten older, complacent in my eating habits and this class has taught me to appreciate what I have. I have committed to eating better and also work out again.  I have taken the 1st step by seriously considering my food choices, and I’ve also called Bally’s and will be there next week to resume working out.  I’m going to lose some weight slowly without the assistance of pills such as phentermine, although I’m not opposed to them, fad diets, starvation etc.

I’m going to eat to live, and exercise during this winter.  Also, next week I will be debuting my haircut (cutting it all off) so that it’s not a hindrance (i.e, excuse for not working out!!

Y’all know I’ll keep you posted :)

Time to commit…to my apartment

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 27, 2008 in And You Can Quote Me On This..., General, Life in Politics

I’ve lived in my apartment (see below) for 2 yrs now…and I have yet to commit to it.  Meaning, it’s my place-but it’s not my home.  It doesn’t have that warm fuzzy lived in feeling to it.  Lately, I’ve been wanting to ‘commit’ to my apartment…at least as a gesture…a show of commitment,  I’d like to throw up a couple of what-nots on my walls.

http://g.mynewplace.com/P/53/13253/219165.jpg

I REALLY want to focus on my bedroom.  I spend most of my time in my bedroom (writing, homework) and it doesn’t feel like a sanctuary.  I’m thinking an oriental type theme, with those cute little rocks center pieces with the water running over it, some bamboo blinds, maybe if I pawn one of my kids, I could even get a Bonsai Tree ….it’s a thought!  I want my home to feel like a sanctuary.  I mean after all, I have been here 2 yrs.  I might as well have something show for it!

Changes for ‘urban’ cities too, Obama?

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 26, 2008 in General, Life In The U.S.A, Life in Politics

I’m pretty sure  I’ll be voting for Obama as president.  I, like many other people have reservations about the promises he’s made to America for America.

The image “http://www.britannica.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/obama1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Particularly, Middle Class America (MCA).  I know he’s a proponent of tax cuts for MCA, and tax increases for Upper Class, but what about car insurance rates?  Esp, in urban America?  Where is Obama’s stance on the raping and pillaging of  poor/middle class Americans who live in a particular zip code and are being charged TRIPLE that of suburbia?

http://www.insuranceredlining.com/images/header.jpg

Myself, I moved to Detroit bcuz I thought it was cheaper (rent, gasoline etc), and moved out of Detroit due to the redlining (auto & renter’s insurance) incurred.  From inflated utility prices to insurance premiums, life in an urban city is frustrating.  I am not spouting against insurance companies who are pro-less fortunate people, but I am speaking to the companies who are guilty of redlining.

Did u know that Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates?  Will that change for the better, once Obama becomes president of the U.S.A.?

 Time will most certainly tell.

MI Buyouts/ Layoffs Can Equal Entrepreneurial Opportunities…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 25, 2008 in Life In The U.S.A, Makin' $$$ The Only Way I Know How...

Another round of layoffs have been announced at Chrysler. This will affect the white-collar workers. According to Detroit Free Press, Chrysler will be eliminating ‘1 in 4′ position.  While that isn’t good news, employees from other corporations, such as Ford turned that bad news into great news by launching long forgotten dreams!

This may be the time for some employees to look into undertaking a  small business franchise, or turning their hobby into a hustle. I know a woman who cooked while she was a full-time employee.  When she left her company she became a successful caterer.  These economic times are uncertain for sure, but now’s not the time to panic. It’s time to formulate a ‘Plan B, C.’  Sacrifices may have to be made, but aren’t we worth it?  What would YOU  do if your job was snatched from under you?

If your answer is, ‘I don’t know’ then now’s the time initiate a back-up plan.

My Nutrition Class…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 25, 2008 in Life, My aging process, healthy eating

This won’t be a long post, but I wanted to write about the things I’ve learned, and previously disregarded, in my nutrition class.  I assumed my professor would be an old lady-a dietitian who’d tell us not to eat junk food, blah blah blah.

My professor ended up being a black female doctor as in M.D.  Now black folks know, black drs. and dentists are hard on our people…and while Dr. Menzies wasn’t hard-she’s definitely no-nonsense…and I appreciated it.  Studying the effects of GERD (acid reflux), hypertension, diabetes and other diseases related to diet have caused me to realize, I’m gambling with my life.  Like it or not healthy cooking is a must, as I’ve discussed in my previous post the issues encountered if I eat certain foods.  The easiest manner in my home is utilizing my George Foreman grill-which my son uses more often than I do.

http://www.jeffsrecipes.com/images/appliances/george_foreman/george_foreman_grill.jpg

The foreman grill doesn’t allow much room for excuses because even if you’re pressed for time, this grill can cook chicken breast in a manner of minutes and it’s not dried out.  I must take my life seriously as I’m hoping (in due time) to be a grandmother, and I need them to massage my feet and rub their ‘Sugah Mama’s’ back, lol  no, i’m not kidding!  lol  I just really appreciated my Nutrition class! Thanks, Dr. Menzies

My Aging Process

Since I’ve accepted the fact that I am indeed aging, I’ve been much happier.

On graying:

I was 36 or 37 (40 now) when I discovered my first gray hair. Can I tell you, on everything I love, my eyes refused to acknowledge that strand of hair as the color gray-but insisted to my brain it was indeed BLONDE?! LOL smh, Have you ever heard of anyone, esp. a black person, ‘turning blonde’ in their mid-30’s? lol Well, my eyes could not deny much longer for a year later those grays had multiplied. I’d say I had about 12 that following year. Honey, I’m 40 and I CAN’T EVEN COUNT the grays in my head, ok? lol and it’s ok. On my right front hairline I even have a gray streak coming in, just like my mother and I’m digging it. If my hair was done, I’d post pics and show you…seriously it’s not done. Only someone with gray hair would say this, and I agree:

My skin:

I thought I was embracing the caucasian part of my DNA when I began to sprout freckles in my 20’s. Who knew those ‘freckles’ were a prelude to the moles that would be sprinkled across my face in my 30’s? lol, So now insteadof looking at treatments for acne I’m looking at treatments to make my skin tauter. U also lose elasticity. Skin doesn’t not snap back as quickly as before!

Weight Gain: It’s true, your waist does thicken and it’s harder to lose weight.

Aches and pains:

I thought my mother was exaggerating on this one. She wasn’t. I told my kids I have to do a pre-wake up, to my real wake up! I can’t just spring out of bed anymore-r u crazy? I’ll pull a muscle, get a charlie horse! I have to see a podiatrist, something’s wrong with my right foot, and something’s wrong with my left knee. Let’s not talk about back pain…lol

http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/ear0599l.jpg

Food:

I do not dictate the foods I eat. My stomach, and esophagus does-oh and my son Tony. I am unable to digest dairy products, correction I can digest it-I just can’t process it. Yes I’m lactose intolerant, and I’ll spare you the gory details. Sadly, unless I pop a lactaid pill-I cannot eat ice cream, milk, etc. Same with spicy acidic foods. I have acid reflux that seems to worsen at night. Hot sauce, tomato (tomato based products-pizza sauce), chips can have me bolt up in the middle of the night cuz it feels like an inferno is burning in my esophagus!OUCHHHH!

When I want to take a walk on the wildside and risk my esophagus, Tony (like an angel on my shoulder) will say, “Now ma, you know your chest is going to burn, and then you’ll be mad you ate that. I don’t want to hear it, lol” Don’t you hate it when ur kids are right??

My Mind:

I love who I am today. I am confident, strong, fabulous and baby I KNOW I am sexy. Today, my mood, day, or being is dictated by the attention or lack thereof received by my male counterparts. I know FOR MYSELF that I am somebody…and that didn’t come overnight. I had to TAKE BACK the power that I handed over to men (the men had not a clue!) Yeah sometimes I do wish I had the body as in my 20’s, but back then I was a suicidal mess. I know how to face adversity today, and I know how to let things rolll off my back. I can also tell you off, and leave you asking yourself If I just insulted u. YES! I’m more prone to forgive, and leave it in God’s hands. I am wise. Not always smart, but l try to be. :)

A Nice Surprise…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 23, 2008 in General

Note: Ok, so I’m writing with a little more frequency over here cuz I PAY for this site. I was putting so much time in YBR my 1st born, that I neglected the blog I adopted :)…moving right along:

I love books. There’s nothing like exploring the world w/out leaving the comfort of your home. I began to read as a child due to my tumultuous upbringing. Living with an alcoholic parent was filled with uncertainties. Am I goin to get in trouble today? Will mom be drunk when I come home? Will her and daddy be engaged in an argument, tonight?? Those uncertainties were a constant in my home…that was until I realized I was able to absorb myself into the lives of the subject I read about. My fave author as a child was Judy Blume. Just thinking of her name caused a huge smile to form across my face. Although Blume’s characters were white and I’m black, I connected to her books esp. ‘Are U There God, it’s me Margaret.’ Story of a young lady who felt neglected while growing up. I’m currently reading a book given to me by my co-worker entitled ‘Love in the time of Cholera’ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  I learned recently, it’s an Oprah pick.  Well this’ll be one of the few times I agree with her on something.  This book is on point.

http://www.bookswim.com/images_books/large/Love_in_the_Time_of_Cholera-119225846372285.jpg

This book is so beautifully written you’d know the writer was either a) a woman or b) not an American. It’s a period piece that explores true love and how it transcends time. I can’t divulge anymore cuz I’m at the beginning. what was the last book YOU read?

I Need To Learn To Relax…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 23, 2008 in Life

I’m serious I need to learn how to chill. I love writing, but I do need to broaden my horizons. I want to travel, I’m terrible-I’ve been procrastinating (won’t say for how long!) when it comes to attaining my passport. I want to travel to exotic lands, but I haven’t applied for my passport :| U don’t even have to tell me! lol

http://tesol1.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/thaibeach.jpg

I want toys (not THOSE KIND…welllll maybe I , noooo no no I don’t, well maybe just one…nevermind) that women play with. U know how men have their electronics, boats, cars, video games etc..what do we as women consider as toys?? I’ve not a clue.

For GAWD’s sake, please don’t say shopping. I HATE shopping. It makes me sweat, I do not like goin to 12 stores for 1 blouse, BUY A BLOUSE ALREADY!!

That gene has been activated in every female member of my family EXCEPT me. I can take it or leave it. LOL I did take up ballroom, but once I mastered it, I grew bored. I need help! Maybe (seriously) I’ll get another tattoo. I have four, nicely placed…hmmmm, I’ll give that some thought. In the meantime if you have any relaxing ideas….please let me know :)

This is a real TATTOO! The workmanship is AMAZING!

Xmas Thoughts in October…

Posted by User ImageBria on Oct 23, 2008 in Ain't That A...?!, Can I get an Amen!!, Huh?!, Life, Life In The U.S.A

So, October is winding down making it’s way towards Halloween. the funny thing about that is-it seems that people are willing to negate Halloween in lieu of Xmas, Xmas gifts, Xmas shopping, Xmas wish list, etc. Why must we have this conversation now??

At work, people have already began the countdown to Xmas-I forgot the actual number- furiously planning the days they’ve scheduled off cuz they have seniority (I ain’t mad at ‘em)…but goodness, can I please get thru Halloween & Thxgiving?? Must I begin thinking of ipods, MP3 players, laptops, gift cards, clothes and lawd only knows what else, now?  Tonight, I drove around my neighborhood and the pumpkins are seriously out on display! I was relieved!
