Death, In Celebrity News, Sadness

Wow, what sadness.  I’m not familiar with Katoucha, but the news is horribly sad. I pray for peace in this time of mourning for Katoucha’s friends and family.  **warning** if u view pics, be cautioned about 2nd pic…u can see her legs as she’s being placed in tarp….

PARIS, France (AP) — The body of Katoucha Niane, one of the first African women to attain international stardom as a model and a vocal opponent of female genital mutilation, was found in the Seine River, police said Friday.

Known simply as Katoucha, the former top model for Yves Saint Laurent and other top designers was found Thursday near the Garigliano bridge in Paris, judicial police in Paris said.

An autopsy showed no signs of foul play, pointing to the possibility that the 47-year-old may have fallen accidentally into the river, they said.

She had been missing since January and was last seen returning home from a party. She lived in a houseboat near Paris’ Alexandre III bridge, and her handbag was later found on the boat.

The Guinean-born model told The Associated Press in 1994 that she ran away to Europe at 17 aiming to be a model. Her big break came when Jules-Francois Crahay, then the designer at Lanvin, spotted her in a line-up. The label hired her as a fitting model. Her first catwalk modeling was for Thierry Mugler at the start of the 1980s.

After quitting the runway, she turned to speaking out actively against female circumcision, describing her own experience at age 9 in a book, “Katoucha, In My Flesh,” which was published last year.

“I will never get the incomparable pain out of my head,” she wrote in the book, which she dedicated to her three children.

Don’t Miss

Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director, Michael Roberts, said Katoucha was “one those girls who used her fame to spotlight the misfortunes of others.”

“She always seemed so gracious and very lovely,” he said. “She was sunny and she was bright, and I liked her a lot.”

Katoucha set up her own label in 1994 after years of modeling for the likes of Christian Lacroix and Saint Laurent. Singers Cher and France’s Johnny Hallyday were among the stars who turned out for her show.

“I don’t pretend to be like Lacroix, Saint Laurent or the others,” she said at the time. “But I was certainly in a great school by wearing their clothes and going to the fittings. I learned several basic lessons, including: Don’t cut the fabric until you’ve got the ‘toile,’ or heavy linen prototype, just right.”

Katoucha was the daughter of Djibril Tamsir Niane, an archaeologist and writer. She said that her father was initially disappointed that she didn’t become “a professional intellectual, with a university degree,” but later reconciled to her other successes. source

Hitting The Fan..., Hotmessness Indeed, In My Own Backyard, Life in Politics

My words are this…Detroit Mayor has bitten off more than he can chew. He’s in over his head, and his reputation is goin to be dirtier than mud/clay mixed. If you’re unawares Kwame, Detroit’s youngest mayor ever…had an affair w/his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty and his “sex texts” on his state given cell was revealed and publicized. Now suspicions has circled around him like vultures and a carcass when a stripper was killed at the Manoogian Mansion (Mayor’s residence). Believing evidence may lie on past texts, motions were filed to release the rest of past texts. Kwame filed to suppress. Well yesterday the Michigan State Supreme Court-denied Mayor Kwame Kilpatrice. It’s on now….

Release Of Secret Documents Not An End To Mayor’s Trouble

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has lost one battle in an ongoing text-messaging sex scandal, but his next fight may be to stay out of legal jeopardy while saving his job as head of one of the nation’s largest cities.Download: Read Lawyer’s Deposition About Secret Documents

Exhibits Released
Statement: Statement From Mayor’s Office
SoundOff: Do you agree with the ruling?
Timeline Of Text Message Scandal A prosecutor is expected to rule by mid-March on whether she will pursue felony perjury charges against Kilpatrick and his former top aide for statements both made under oath in a whistle-blower’s trial that eventually cost Detroit taxpayers $8.4 million.

Records made public Wednesday also reveal a trail of deceit — signed off on by Kilpatrick and former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty — detailing the cover-up of an affair between the two as a factor behind the huge settlement amount. The documents reveal how the mayor decided to quickly settle the whistleblower case.In a five-hour deposition, Mike Stefani, the fired officer’s attorney, recounted how on the last day in October he showed up to settlement negotiations with the city with an envelope detailing the text messages between the mayor and Christine Beatty, and proof they perjured themselves on the stand. The documents outline how Sam McCargo, the mayor’s attorney, opened the envelope and read it.Stefani continued, “Another 15 minutes went by. And the facilitator came back into the room and said, “He got ahold of the mayor at the airport, and the mayor has approved negotiating for a global resolution.”

Stefani said he subpoenaed the city’s communications carrier, SkyTel, for text messages from those periods because they appeared to coincide with a long-rumored wild party at the mayor’s official residence in 2002.”… the Manoogian Mansion party was supposed to have taken place in September. And I wanted to see if there were text messages about that,” Stefani said in the deposition.

And one of the exhibits released Wednesday, Exhibit 11, appeared to be proof the city wanted to cut a deal to protect the mayor’s alleged philandering. The city would not appeal an $8.4 million settlement for three police officers investigating the mayor, in exchange for the officer’s attorney to destroy thousands of text messages that exposed the mayor and his chief of staff as lovers. If the lawyer or police talked about it, they would fork over every penny of the $8.4 million the city paid them. And it wasn’t just love the mayor was hiding.

Exhibit 11 shows the mayor wanted all the banking documents showing special deals for Beatty’s current and former house turned over and destroyed.Detroit Free Press attorney Herschel Fink calls it the smoking gun in a monumental cover-up from the public and City Council. The documents were released Wednesday a few hours after the Supreme Court ruled.City lawyers initially filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals to stop Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Robert Colombo Jr.’s order releasing documents from the whistle-blowers’ agreement as well the Jan. 30 deposition of attorney Michael Stefani, who represented former Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown and officer Harold Nelthrope in the lawsuit.

A transcript of Stefani’s five-hour deposition was among the documents released Wednesday afternoon. The Supreme Court’s decision was unanimous. It concurred with an Appeals Court panel that said Colombo was correct in ordering the documents to be unsealed. They are part of an $8.4 million settlement the city made with former officers in last summer’s whistle-blowers’ suit. The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News sued the city to get the sealed documents. In addition to the deposition, the documents released Wednesday include the initial Oct. 17 settlement agreement, which included a clause keeping the text messages secret; Kilpatrick’s rejection of that agreement on Oct. 27; and a copy of an escrow agreement detailing how documents related to the settlement would be placed into a safe deposit box.

“There’s nothing new there,” Sharon McPhail, the mayor’s legal adviser, said of the documents. “It really was all about the principle of protecting the mediation process.”In Stefani’s deposition, he explained that he thought Kilpatrick rejected the Oct. 17 agreement because the Detroit Free Press had filed a Freedom of Information Act request asking for the settlement.”I’m presuming, but don’t know for a fact, that they — that is, Mayor Kilpatrick and perhaps Beatty, did not …. want the reference to the text messages in the Settlement Agreement,” Stefani said.

After the mayor rejected the Oct. 17 agreement, a separate confidentiality agreement detailing how the text messages would be kept secret was reached Nov. 1 between all parties.Stefani was deposed by lawyers for the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News after Colombo allowed the newspapers to question him.The city argued the documents and deposition should remain sealed because they involved communications between attorneys during court-ordered mediation, but the high court ruled “there is no FOIA exemption for settlement agreements.”City of Detroit Corporation counsel John Johnson said the city is disappointed by the ruling.”

Opening up settlement information to public view will most certainly put a chilling effect on parties trying to settle cases,” Johnson said in a statement. “This ruling discourages the city from entering into the time honored and cost effective process of mediation.”James Canning, deputy press secretary for the city of Detroit, further added to Johnson’s sentiment in a written statement released Wednesday night.” The purpose of our legal action from the beginning has been based on the principle of protecting the sanctity of the mediation process,” said Canning.” It is evident by today’s news reports that no new information has been revealed. This is just a re-hashing of information that has been published over and over during the past four weeks. We are thoroughly reviewing this document and will consider any and all appropriate legal action,” he said.

The Free Press first reported last month on the embarrassing text messages between the married mayor and Beatty, who also was married at the time. Beatty announced her resignation shortly thereafter and Kilpatrick made a televised speech apologizing to family and constituents but avoiding direct mention of the allegations. The Free Press has not said how it obtained the text messages. Kilpatrick and Beatty denied under oath having a physical relationship in the whistle-blowers’ lawsuit filed by Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown and Officer Harold Nelthrope.

kwame-beatty.jpg

They claimed they were fired or forced to resign for investigating claims that Kilpatrick used his security unit to cover up extramarital affairs.Nelthrope told Local 4 he does not hold a grudge against the city but he does have some harsh words for the mayor.”It there are things that are done inappropriately, maybe it’s better for the city that he resigns his position,” said Nelthrope.

The documents could open the door to a perjury case against Kilpatrick. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is investigating and has said she expects to have a decision by mid-March.Detroit City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. said he received a subpoena from the prosecutor’s office and appeared Wednesday for a deposition. He said the deposition took about 45 minutes but declined to offer any details.Cockrel said fellow City Council member Kwame Kenyatta also appeared for a deposition on Wednesday.”This is complete indication for the idea that public officials cannot lie under oath and go behind closed doors in secrecy to make decisions with so much public money in the balance,” Free Press Editor Paul Anger said in a story posted on the paper’s Web site. “The public’s right to know has been upheld.”"Finally, as a result of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press, the public is about to have access to their own records,” said James E. Stewart, attorney for the News. “These are public records involving the expenditure of millions of dollars of public money that the mayor has attempted to keep from the public and the City Council.”A jury ruled against the city in September, and despite vowing to appeal that decision, Kilpatrick agreed to pay $8.4 million to the plaintiffs and a third former officer who filed a separate lawsuit.Other settlement agreement documents made public Feb. 8 reveal that Kilpatrick and Beatty authorized and signed the confidential agreement with the three officers and their attorney to keep the text messages secret. The text messages are from Beatty’s city-issued pager in 2002 and 2003.The Free Press has not said how it obtained them.

Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly in Wednesday’s ruling said certain parts of the Stefani deposition involved confidential communications protected by court rules. But the city did not argue to redact those parts of the testimony and instead asked that the entire transcript be exempt from disclosure.”Because most of the deposition testimony does not fall within the parameters of (court rules), the trial judge properly decided not to exempt the entire transcript from disclosure,” Kelly wrote.

The Detroit City Council, which signed off on the settlement without knowledge of the secret deal, has opened its own investigation.”I believe that this vindicates the position of the Detroit City Council that enough is enough,” Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel said. “It is time for a transparency, time for accountability and time to take responsibility for actions that individuals have taken.”Attorney General Mike Cox applauded the Supreme Court’s decision. His office had filed a brief urging the court to allow the release of a document Kilpatrick signed showing he rejected an earlier settlement in the case. Cox said he did not have enough information on other documents the newspapers asked to be unsealed.

“The public’s going to benefit from having this information opened up,” Cox spokesman Rusty Hills said. “That’s the whole point of open government.”

General

You may be familiar with Bobby Cutts, a former police officer in OH, who killed his child’s mother-Jesse Davis, was also 9mos preggers w/his daughter Chloe. Oh did I mention he did this in front of his 2yr old son, Blake who told the police what daddy had done?? I talked about it here.

The verdict was read today and here’s the story, straight from CNN:

******
(CNN) — Jurors spared the life of a former Canton, Ohio, police officer who killed his pregnant girlfriend and tearfully asked them for mercy. A judge then sentenced him Wednesday to 57 years to life in prison.

art.davis.wkyc.wews.jpg Jessie Marie Davis, 26, was nine months pregnant when she was killed and dumped in a park in June 2007.

Bobby Lee Cutts Jr., 30, will be 87 by the time he becomes eligible for parole.

He stared straight ahead as the jury of six men and six women recommended that his life be spared.

He and his lawyer teared up as the jurors were polled about their decision. Video Watch Cutts react »

Judge Charles E. Brown added to the sentence, taking other counts into consideration after hearing victim impact statements from the parents and sisters of victim Jessie Marie Davis.

She was 26 and nine months pregnant when she disappeared last June. Her body, and that of her unborn child, were found 10 days later at a state park in northeastern Ohio.

Whitney Davis, Jessie’s sister, directed her anger and grief at Cutts. “You got rid of someone that was an inconvenience. I hate you.” Video Watch Davis’ family lash out at Cutts »

She continued: “”You used and manipulated her over and over and still you sit there and you are not crying. I don’t believe that you are sorry for what you did. I believe that you are sorry that you got caught up in all your lies. I don’t know that you would know the truth.”Watch sister tell Cutts she hates him Video

Cutts took off his eyeglasses as Davis’ father, Ned, addressed him: “Don’t even look at me.”

“Your honor he violently murdered her,” the anguished father continued. “Five-foot-four, nine months pregnant, that baby could have been delivered.”

And, tears rolled down Cutts’ face as Davis’ mother, Patricia Porter, spoke of her grief. “There are mornings I have to cover her picture up, when I can’t get out of bed.”

She continued, “I serve an amazing God, Bobby. A God that forgives and heals and restores people. And all I know today is that I do forgive you, and I know it is only through him that I am able to do that.”

But she turned the other cheek: “I may not have family to go home to after this, but I pray that you make a way for him to get out of there and begin a new life, and to be able to hold his son.”

Porter, who is raising Blake, told Cutts the child “knows what you did. You would not believe the stories he has told us.”

When his time came, Cutts offered no statement, no testimonials to his character.

On February 15, the same jury found Cutts guilty of murdering Jessie Davis and their baby, who was to be named Chloe.

It was Chloe’s death that made Cutts eligible for the death penalty. Jurors convicted him of two counts of aggravated murder — for terminating a pregnancy and taking her life during the commission of a felony.

All the members of the jury are white, as was Davis. Cutts is black.

Cutts, who has maintained Davis’ death was the result of an accidental elbow to the neck, asked the jury to spare his life and offered a tearful apology at his sentencing hearing Tuesday. Video Watch Cutts’ tearful plea »

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I’m asking you to spare my life,” he said. “To imagine that I was responsible for the death of Jessie, the mother of my children and my unborn daughter, is beyond any words that I can express,” Cutts added, reading from a handwritten statement.

“Words cannot bring them back, nor can they erase the pain I’ve caused, but I want to apologize,” he said.

Cutts’ lawyer, Fernando Mack, had urged jurors to recommend the lowest available penalty — 25 years to life — to allow him to play a limited role in his other children’s lives.

Mack acknowledged that many of the jurors might still be angry with Cutts for leaving his 2½-year-old son, home alone for more than a day while his mother lay dead in a field.

But sentencing Cutts to death hurts Blake even more, he argued. “That is still Blake’s father, like it or not. The prosecutor here wants you to kill Blake’s father, so now he’ll have no parents.”

Stark County Assistant Prosecutor Dennis Barr attacked Cutts’ character and his sincerity on the stand. A police officer should have known better, he said.

“Bobby Cutts took an oath to serve and protect,” the prosecutor argued. “But on June 14, 2007, Bobby Cutts did not serve and protect. He destroyed.”

According to testimony, Cutts rolled Davis’ body in a comforter and dumped it in a park, leaving toddler son Blake in the house alone at the crime scene in a soiled diaper.

“Mommy’s in the rug,” Blake told police, according to testimony.

Prosecutors charged during the trial that Cutts buckled under the financial pressure of additional child support, killed Davis, and then created a cover story to try to get away with it.

After the sentencing, prosecutors — no longer restricted in their comments by a gag order — told reporters Cutts led authorities to Davis’ body, but no deal was made in return.

Davis’ father, Ned Davis, told reporters, “Our family, in one sense, was fortunate that we had some legal resolution because I know along with this, there are families out there that don’t ever get an answer. It doesn’t make it any less painful, but at least this part of it is resolved.”

This man is out cold.

A po-po gone crazy.

He lays down with her and many other women (he was married)…deposits his seed in her and other women, and decides he doesn’t want to pay child support.

Ain’t that a duck.

So he goes out like a punk, and KILLS A 9 MOS PREGNANT WOMAN.

But Jesse wasn’t just any pregnant woman.

it was the woman HE IMPREGNATED?

His son’s (Blake) mom!

He kills her, dumps her in his truck, rides around with her, gets a friend to help dispose of the body-

Oh, Blake was at home alone…(father of year potential, maybe?) while this was going on.

He is unbelievable-and yet he decides to do the “Hillary” and pour on the waterworks…he cried.

*sigh*

well, for whatever the jury let’s him live.

How nice.

So not only does the Davis family have to contend with the fact-he killed two very important females in their lives (daughter and granddaughter), they also have to pay for this maniac’s upkeep in prison for the next 57 yrs… minimum.

NOT.

Makes me proud to be an American.

And You Can Quote Me On This..., Death, For The Love of Money..., What In The...?!, What's So Funny About That?!

Sliding by my girl Hott’s blog, I come across a youtube vid about the show that’s taken America by storm called Moment of Truth.

What I have to say on that hot garbage is this:

Someone is going to end up dead or in jail as a result of this mess, Fox is passing off as television entertainment.

This is messier than Jerry Springer-back in the day.

The fact that you’d air your dirty laundry-WITH UR FAM & FRIENDS ON LIVE TV is horrible enuf, BUT TO CONTINUE the embarrassment bcuz of $$$ that Uncle Sam is going to eat up like Pacman, anyway???? It’s nothing short of retarded.

I’m amazed this man did not commit Murder (Crime of passion) in the first degree on TV against his wife.

Check it out:

UPDATE:: I just came from Fox’s website and watched an episode of Moment of Truth, on the FOX ON DEMAND. I came away with sort of a different attitude, in that in watching Ray’s episode (#104), this show can in fact open dialogue between family members who were unable before. I even bcame teary-eyed a couple of times. I’m a wuss (sometimes) and I’m paaaarrrrrouuuuuud of it! Ray is a good guy, who’s held his hurts inside. You’d definitely root for him.

The book will detail his marriage to Profitess Juanita “Juanie-B” Bynum.

It’s like watching the aftermath of a bad car accident.

You don’t want to look, but you look anyway-hoping to see something you’ve never seen b4! That’s where I am with this book-morbid curiosity. I don’t want to read that mess, but I do. I don’t want to buy that book, but I probably will. I don’t want to put money in Weaks’ pockets, but I’ll probably do just that.

what_love_taught_me2008-book-cover-med-small.jpg

That makes me just as messy as they are.

Well, not THAT messy-but u get the idea.

I care, but I don’t.

I hate that it’s come to this….the demise of their marriage, but God can still cause dead, dry bones to live. I don’t know. After the releasing of this book, I think Weaks’ has a better chance of getting married in the pits of hell. But then again-we are talking about Juanie B. Who knows what she’s up to next? The mud has now been slung in Juanie B’s corner. People put on your rain gear..it’s about to get ugly.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Consumer confidence is at the lowest level in more than 14 years according to the Conference Board, a business and research organization that publishes the index.

Now Hiring

Some of the most stable jobs are often found in education, health care and government.

One of the biggest fears for Americans: a weak job market.

The growth rate for jobs falls seven months before a recession and continues to fall during a recession, according to Hugh Johnson of the financial services firm Johnson Illington Advisors. But about five months into a recession, the job market begins to pick up steam, says Johnson.

In fact, the job market gets stronger even before the stock market goes up.

Retail and industrial jobs get axed first in a slowing economy, according to Johnson. But, those same jobs are the ones that pick up first. The steady jobs tend to be in education, health care and government jobs.

No matter what industry you’re in, recession-proofing your own job is vital.

First, gauge your risk of getting a pink slip. To do that, start to investigate how other companies are faring in your industry. Are there lay-offs at similar companies? Have you heard from other people how difficult it is to find a job in your field? Perhaps your company nixed the annual picnic or cancelled sponsorships in the community. This could be a sign that belt-tightening is on the way.

In addition to the external signs, there are some internal red flags that indicate you could lose your job. If you’re not invited to meetings that your peers are; if you don’t get copied on e-mails, or get passed up for good assignments. That’s a sign your job could be in trouble, according to Kate Wendleton, president of the job search organization the Five O’ Clock Club.

Pay special attention to the relationship you have with your boss.

“If you don’t like your boss, chances are, your boss doesn’t like you either,” said Wendleton.

If you’ve ever undermined your boss, watch out! It could come back to haunt you.

Whether you’ve experienced these signs or not, here are a few strategies you can use to protect your job:

  • Make sure your skills are up-to-date. If you find your own skill set is outdated, it may be time to take a course at your local community college or a professional trade group.
  • Look at employment postings on job sites that mirror your own position.
  • Take note of what special qualifications or training is required. Ultimately, you want to position yourself as a specialist in your industry, according to Penelope Trunk, author of Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success.
  • “In a tight job market, employers can hold out for the perfect fit,” Trunk advises.

Another tactic: Don’t do the grunt work.

“You want to be the person who gets the leading edge assignments,” recommends Wendleton.

If you’re willing to pitch in and help in any capacity, your company may be less likely to keep you. Employees working on high-profile jobs are often perceived as more important or valuable. Volunteer for assignments that will raise your profile and politely turning down menial jobs — is just as important as cherry picking the right assignments.

In a tightening job market, doing your job well just isn’t enough. It’s all in how you market yourself. Do your best to make sure that not only your boss knows how hard you work, but that your boss’s boss knows what you’re working on.

If you’re in the elevator with someone higher in the corporate pecking order, don’t just comment on the weather. Talk about what project you’re working on or how great the results are expected to be. The more well known you are, the better you’ll weather possible job cuts.

And don’t forget the importance of networking. One way to boost your visibility is to become involved in an association within your field. Not only will this make it harder to fire you, but you’ll have contacts for other job opportunities.

Online social networking is another story. Don’t put too much of yourself out there. Before you blog about last night’s date or post pictures of you and your friends in the midst of St. Patty’s Day revelry — remember that employers routinely look at social-networking Web sites to see what people are saying about themselves, according to Wendleton.

Before you put anything out there in the public realm, make sure in a way that you wouldn’t mind your employer or a potential employer to see you. Ask yourself, “Do I want my boss to see that?” If the answer is no, then remove the photos or comments from your personal page and step away from the keyboard.

One of the best approaches to protecting your job is to schedule a meeting with your boss. Experts recommend that you find out what it takes to keep your job. Ask your supervisor if you’re doing a good job and what steps you might take to improve.

“The fact that you care, matters,” said Wendleton.

It’s much harder to turn around and fire someone after you’ve reassured them that they’re on the right track.

Finally, keep yourself out there on the market — even if you don’t think you’ll ever lose your job.

Research from the Five O’ Clock Club indicates that people who are out there interviewing for other positions tend to develop more self-confidence, reduce their vulnerability and get better assignments on their current jobs.

It may be a hard lesson, but remember that keeping your nose to the grindstone isn’t always a surefire way to protect yourself from that dreaded pink slip. (source)

    It’s TUESDAY TOOT TIME!

    I’m tooting:

    • My mother’s car was stolen last week and that meant chauffeur duty for me, and I complained not ONE TIME!
    • I’ve taken up “Detroit Ballroom Dancing” and I have not missed a class, esp during lots of snow-such as today. I WILL GO TO CLASS!
    • Yesterday was manic Monday, and instead of complaining at work…I wished everyone “Happy Monday!”
    • **Toot for God**I said a quick, very informal prayer asking God to recover my mom’s car. Two hours later I received a text message saying:they (police) found my car.”
    • I’ve learned to let my child (oldest) go and make her own decisions-regardless if I THINK THEY’RE THE STUPIDEST ever made on Earth, lol. I have let go and LET GOD.
    • I’m going to work today eventhough I have vacation days, and looks to be covered in flour, and people do not drive well when there’s snow-I’m still going to work!
    • I did this meme eventhough I didn’t want to! lol

Anyone who knows me, know I don’t roll with Oprah like this (posting from her site).  I found this info at CNN, and it was interesting.

    I just want to know:

After reading this-WHAT KIND OF MAN IS LEFT????

(Oprah.com) — One guy is needier than quicksand. Another is jealous of your cocker spaniel. A third quietly hates all womankind. Here’s a list of men you should put in your rearview mirror, ASAP.

art.dead.end.jpgCertain clues in the way a man acts may be a hint that you need to ditch him.

    Joe No-Show
You meet in a city where neither of you lives, at a convention or a wedding. The calls and e-mails are making the phone lines sweat; two months later, he’s begging you to visit.

You tell the woman next to you on the plane that, after years of searching, you think you’ve met The One, and the two of you giggle with anticipation all the way to baggage claim.

Thirty minutes later, when the carousel stops going around, she looks at you with deep pity and asks if she can give you a ride somewhere. That’s the moment to go straight back to the ticket counter.

    Mr. Jealousy
At first, he’ll get a little short with a waiter who flirts with you. Then he’ll be exasperated by how long you and the postmaster discuss the rising price of stamps. When he points out that you and your brother hug too long to be appropriate or that your gynecologist is a lesbian and obviously has the hots for you, it’s time to give him his walking papers.

However flattering his jealousies may seem in the first five minutes of your relationship, they’ll get old and confining more quickly than you can imagine, and when you do finally break up with him, he will hang the scarves you left behind on your trees like nooses and follow you and the next man you date all over town.

    The Bully
This is the man who sits you down, grabs your arm, pulls your hair, or pokes your chest. While most of us know better than to let ourselves get socked in the mouth the way Ralph Kramden was always threatening to do to Alice (but even then never following through), there’s a whole universe of more “minor” infractions in the violence department that should disqualify your new beau instantaneously (but all too often does not).

For the first time since you’ve been dating, he’s too sick to make a date. You try to ignore the fact that it happens to be your birthday, and you assemble the ingredients for your famous chicken soup. You drop it off inside his door.

Two days later, he’s still sick, but you’ve been invited over. You ask if you can heat up some soup for him, and he says, in a small, congested voice, “That would be wonderful.” You pour the soup from the Tupperware into the pot, and you see that there are mushrooms in it. Your famous chicken soup doesn’t contain mushrooms. Conclude that this man has another source of soup and will continue to cheat on you for as long as you give him the chance.

    The “Liberated” Man
I used to have a friend who said, “I seem to have a very liberating effect on whatever man I’m dating. We go on three dates, and the next thing I know he’s moved in with me, he’s quit his job, and his car is up on blocks in my yard.”

Certain men are more prone to this type of liberation than others, I have found: Carpenters, river guides, and flamenco guitarists all fall into the category of men who are perfectly willing to hand themselves over to the care of a good woman, as well as visual artists, stage performers, and racers (ski, bike, boat) of all kinds.

    The Betrayed
I seem to have dated an inordinate number of men who have just been left by a woman for a woman. In general, these men are angry beyond all reason, no matter to what lengths they may go to disguise it, and if you date one, be ready to give up all your girlfriends, or you will be accused of being a lesbian, too.

    The Narcissist
He doesn’t like your dog? Do we even need to talk about this one? Put it at the top of the category that includes he won’t make eye contact with your kid, he doesn’t want to meet your sister, and he whines the first time you make plans with your girlfriend.

A man threatened by the love you have for the dog you sleep with is going to be threatened by more things than you can name. Dating him is inviting the type of conflict into your life that will make you tired before you even get up in the morning.

    Mr. Resentment
Pay close attention to how he handles your accomplishments. If you get a promotion with a raise and he breaks it down to show you how it really only amounts to six dollars a day after taxes, that’s the first strike. When he uses any expression like “your little project,” count that as two.

Just because men are having a hard time adjusting to the idea that women are capable breadwinners doesn’t mean you have to martyr yourself into helping them make the transition. There are men out there who are more than happy to bask in the glow their women cast and to consider your talents a positive reflection on them.

    The Virtual Lover
What a relief it is when a man doesn’t try to force you into bed on the first date. How charmed you are when, on the third date, he says he wants to wait until “you both can’t stand it anymore.” How sympathetic you become when, on the sixth date, he tells you how badly he was hurt by your predecessor. How confused you are six months later when you’ve realized his pager goes off every time you get naked, but he’s still sending you roses and talking teddy bears.

A surprising number of great romancers out there never get around to having sex. To the date-weary woman, this can seem like not the worst combination, but beware. Eventually he will blame his problems on the smell of your breath or the size of your thighs.

The Guy Who Had the Happiest Childhood This Side of the Beav
His mother was perfect; his father never smoked or drank or cheated. He hates the way his friends blame their parents for everything, when he and his seven brothers and sisters had love pouring down on them from the moment they woke in the morning until they went to bed.

However refreshing this might sound the first time you hear it, listen carefully for a voice that is trying to convince itself, listen for the creak and crack of a personal mythology in the throes of shattering. When it comes crashing to the ground, it’s going to make a very big noise, and most likely your relationship will come crashing down with it.

    ***

I have nothin to say.  ‘Cept when you’re my age (almost 40) the pickins are super slim.  Just seems ez’er to stay single then to sort thru all of these men with drama.
